Hi all,

I have been dealing with a lot of anxiety lately so I decided to talk to my primary care doctor and she gave me a prescription for 37.5mg of Effexor. However, I have been reading online that this dosage is not effective and you need to take at least 75mg for it to be effective.

I was just wondering if anyone had success with such a low dosage? Also, how bad are the start up side-effects?

I'm on 37.5 I had no side effects. I'm suppose to up my dose as of last week, but my appt. with my shrink got cancelled and isn't rescheduled until March 31st. I was on wellbutrin 300mg before the effexor and switched from one to the other but I've noticed I have alittle less anxiety with the effexor then I did before even though it's a low dose, so I'm hoping once it's upped to have even less anxiety. I also take 10mg of abilify but have been on that for about 3 years and it doesn't help with the anxiety.

AngelLisa, did you notice any weight gain from the Effexor as well?

Hard to say, I'm already over weight and don't weigh myself lol. Haven't been to the doctors in a month, so not sure I've gained any or not. I don't feel like I have, and I'm for sure not eating anymore then usual so I hope I haven't gained any.

Best of luck to you on your start up, hoping it's goes like mine did with no side effects. :)

Many people take less than what is considered a theraputic dose...

It is completely an individual thing...so just seeing how you react will give you the info you need to proceed.

You may need to eventually up your dose...in fact this is likely your doctor's thinking...

...but then again, you may find relief at the low level, and that would be nice, right?

Hi

We are all different when it come to antidepressants and what works well for one person may not work as well for an other.

I used to take Effexor 150mg and found it to be a good medication but it stopped working after a couple of years which seems the norm with AD. As SC mentioned if you are feeling like the dose you are on is helping then why change?

I did put on weight when I was on Effexor can't remember how much but it wasn't enough for me to think about stopping it. The only other thing I found with Effexor was it was quite hard to discontinue it and I had to come of it very slowly over a couple of months.

I hope it works well for you.

Thank you everyone for your input and support!! I love knowing that I am not alone and have somewhere to consult to. I think I am going to go ahead and begin the medication this week, I'd rather gain a few pounds than be anxious and panicky to the point where I am not leaving my room.

OH to answer your question about weight gain, I actually weighed myself today and I've lost 7 pounds in the past month, so no weight gain.
