Lexapro Increase to 20mg

Hi all

I have just increased Lexapro from 10mg (was on 10mg for 6wks) to 20mg 9 days ago and have been feeling great from the increase...but over the last two days I have had horrible anxiety return not sure if its because I had alcohol over the weekend because I was doing so well! My psychiatrist did advise not to drink but because I was feeling so good I thought "why not"...has anyone else gone through SSRI increase felt great then not so great is this normal? how long does it take for the full dose to kick in? thank you!

I know when you're starting a new anti-depressant, it takes around 30 days. I'm unsure if this also applies to upping the dosage of something you are already taking.

Also, when you think about it, you're taking the Lexapro to help with depression. If you're drinking, alcohol being a depressant, things probably won't be ideal. If you take your medicine in the morning and have your drinks at night, I do not believe that is quite as bad.

I'm talking out of my rear a little bit here, but these are hunches. I do suspect this to pass and that you will feel better soon. You may want to allow your body to adjust to the new dosage before having another drink.

When starting or upping a dose the side effects could last up to 4 weeks, usually within 2-3 weeks they subside. It takes 6 to 12 weeks to reach full potential of the AD depending on which one it is, a good time line is 6 to 8 weeks for most.

Also, recovery of anxiety 100% is usually not the case, we wax and wane. Medication helps yes but doesn't usually doesn't take it all away. Working with your coping skills, and/or seeing a therapist is the best course of action along with the medication.

The same thing happened to me when I increased my dose. I kept telling my husband that I thought it was too high of a dose for me. about 6 weeks into the increase, it let up some, and now I've leveled out.

I do still have anxiety. As AL said, it doesn't stop it completely, but it helps you manage it better. During the time of adjustment it is best not to drink alcohol. Hang in there, and things should improve soon.

Thank you so much for your kind words and advice I'm hoping things will improve soon since I was feeling great last week! I am seeing a therapist as well trying to apply all the CBT skills I have learnt. Completely cutting out alcohol for now.

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately it seems to be the norm the feel worse before you feel better again when changing or increasing medication so I would stick with it if you can and if things have not improved in a week or so go back and speak with your doctor. IMO Lexapro is a really good medication and works well for anxiety.

With regards to drinking alcohol it is best to avoid but I do have the occasional drink and don't have to many problems.
