Prozac and Buspar

I've been taking Buspar for 4 days now after feeling the full withdrawal side effects of Effexor. After a VERY rough weekend I went to my psychiatrist for an emergency appointment this morning and she gave me an Rx for Prozac. As a side note: She is not the doc who tapered me off the Effexor. She said she has had success with Prozac for weaning patients of the Effexor. She said I could discontinue the Buspar.

Here is my question: today was my first good day since I went off the Effexor completely (before I took the Prozac). So I'm apprehensive to stop the buspar. This could just be the withdrawal talking, but...

Any thoughts? Do any docs ever weigh in here?

No, medical professionals can't give any professional advice or opinions here...sorry.

...so I would go with whatever your current prescribing doctor is recommending, unless you would rather stick with the Buspar, and not start another SSRI...

..but you would need to discuss this with her.

Some members have had good results with going with Buspar alone...some not, it is an indiviual thing.

for me prozac was so strong -i didnt need buspar. it worked very well but was a little too strong for my liking. one the plus side there are no withdrawls from prozac. this makes it a perfect drug for helping switch and stop another drug thats hard to get off.

Yes I have heard a lot of pdoc use Prozac to help people wean off Effexor and it works well.

I am currently on 60mg of Prozac and have found it a good medication so I hope it works well for you.

You can stop the buspar without any ill effects. Buspar is super mild, so it probably wasn't doing anything for you in terms of calming you down, especially since you were only on it for 4 days (and it takes at least two weeks to build up in your system).

Thanks everyone. That makes me feel better. I think I'll stop the buspar and just let the prozac do it's thing.

I'd love to hear experiences of people who used prozac for weaning!

i used prozac to wean off zoloft. worked well
