Cold medicine while on Zoloft...

Hi everyone!

I've been on .25 of Zoloft for a month now, but unfortunately, I've got the lovely summertime cold that's been going around. I'm used to taking the homeopathic remedy Cold Calm, but I may need something a little stronger.

Does anyone know of any cold medicine that is okay to take while on Zoloft? I've not had a chance to see the pharmacist to ask, so I figured I would see what, if any, experience everyone here has had.

I am sorry that you are not feeling well.:( I wish you a speedy recovery!

The concern with A/D's and cold medicines are ususally associated only with MAO inhibitor Rx's...which Zoloft is NOT.

An SSRI (Zoloft) and an OTC cold med can be taken together, but could cause sleeplessness/restlesness, so maybe avoid taking your cold medicine before bedtime.

If you still have concerns, by all means contact your doctor or pharmacist.

there is a strong reaction with zoloft and some ingredients in otc cold meds. i remember reading about it when i first started on zoloft. dextromethorepan is the ingredient to avoid. its in cough meds

I am not too sure about cold meds but when I fractured my ankle I was told by my dr not to take Ibuprofen type of painkillers with Sertraline.

So I recommend you to stay away from NSAIDs while you are on Zoloft.

Hi

Some antidepressants could have possible reactions with certain OTC medications so what I usually do is just ask the pharmacist if it is safe to take with the meds that I am on and it is usually ok.

Did you get any fast heart rate with Zoloft in general or waking up with a fast heart rate?

Hi, Pretty Kittay -

No, I've not had any issues with a fast heart rate so far! Only side effects I had in the beginning were constipation and insomnia. I've been lucky.
