Starting medication tomorrow

Hey HW family,

After seeing another Psychiatrist (I felt the first one didn't really take down what was going on with me and just prescribed after 15min of seeing me) I was prescribed "Brand name" Lexapro. I'll be picking it up tonight from the pharmacy and will start tomorrow around lunch. I'm having a lot of anxiety building up to taking the pill but I want these negative thoughts and feelings of worry to calm down for me so that I can use CBT to better tolerate them. I really hope that the meds work for me but I'm so scared that I might not be able to return to the person I am today once I take the leap.

Hey AK,

Congrats on changing docs after not getting a good vibe. Some people settle for whoever comes along, so good for you for being proactive about that. Also, congrats on getting your medicine. I know how scary it is to start taking something new. Just remember that the worst that can happen is that it doesn't work (which you will know within the first 2-3 weeks) and you can stop taking it and try something else.

It won't ruin you for the rest of your life, and it won't change who you are. All these meds do is some sort of magic trick on a few different neurotransmitters, but they don't affect your personality. I think of it like my car. I go to get an oil change and while I'm there, they top off my windshield wiper fluid. Similarly, the medicine goes into my body, fills up where I'm low, and then in a matter of a month or two, I'm good as new.

Let us know how it goes after taking your first dose tomorrow. It should be totally fine and you probably won't notice a thing. Good luck!

I remember how scared and anxious I became before trying my first SSRI.

Best thing I ever did in hindsight, so I really hope it works out for you. Remember it wont fully work till approximately 6-8 weeks and there may be some side affects during start up but I'm sure your psych has you covered. I'm at 6 weeks of Lexapro and feeling like my "old" self if that helps.

Wishing you the best on your start up!! The meds will not change you...

...only help you to feel your best possible and move towards a place of recovery.

Since you are also working on therapy...the Rx need may even be a temporary situation...

...but you will cross that bridge when the time comes.

For now, just take it a step at a time as you are doing...know that you are going in the right direction...

...and that you have support here anytime you need it! :)

Hi AK

Lexapro is a good medication imo I was on it a few years ago and found it really helped my anxiety.

The good thing about medication is that it can give you that much needed relief so that you can focused on your self help.

Yeah BCat, it's awesome! It's a great distraction from anxiety and depression.
