Your mother is right in that the only real difference between a psychologist and psychiatrist is that the latter can prescribe medication, but they usually do have a much better understanding of the medicine and longer training than psychologists.
If you feel you need medication to deal with your anxiety then that's ok, lots of people do and it makes a real difference in their lives. But it isn't a miracle cure, there are still things you will need to do yourself in order to get better and a psychiatrist will help you get through these things as well and give you support and guidance. If you constantly think about
something then taking a pill wont make you forget about
it, but it may make it seem like less of a big deal, or not bother you as much. Beating anxiety isn't easy unfortunately but with the right combination of self help and medicine you can go on to lead a normal life and put it behind you. I've gone through periods of being obsessed over something in my body to the point where I couldn't think of anything else. First time it happened it was my heart. But with time and help from my therapist I got over it and now I never even think about
it. So be patient, it will pass but takes some time.
