Hey everyone,

What medication has work e best for you? How long did it take to kick in, and what we the side effects?

My anxiety is pretty chronic and extreme, resulting in phobia behaviors, low-grade bad moods, intrusive thoughts, and general dread. Any suggestions would be awesome!!

I don't take meds, so can't input any personal experience. ..

...but basically the two main types of meds for anxiety management are A/D's (mostly SSRI and SNRI's) and anti- anxiety medications, such as benzodiazepines.

There are many sub categories that you can research and discuss with your doctor.

As with any given Rx...there are pro's and con's...and everyone will react differently of course...

...but maybe you will get a general place to start with member's input here.:)

When my anxiety first began I was given a low dose antivan for as needed and prescribed 20mg of paxil. They both worked well with only one side effect from the paxil as night sweats (ick) also only took the Ativan for a few months and then went about 9 years with just the paxil and it worked fine.
Within the past year both my parents passed away suddenly and my anxiety spiked again. I was given .25 MG of xanax to take as needed and paxil upped to 30mg about 2 months ago now. I am starting to feel better and all intial side effects are gone and I can go without the xanax most days now. But the intial side effects from the paxil were sleeplessness and some strange brain zap type of feelings and some higher anxiety for about 3 weeks. The xanax doesn't give me any side effects

Hi

Tough question to answer.

Imo Lexapro is the best antidepressant I have taken as it worked really well on anxiety and depression and I had no side effects.

Sc, were you ever on meds?

I disagree with the lexapro but Paxil is ok. I tried Zoloft for a little that does seem to help. Ssi work different for everybody lexapro was wonderful at first then took a toll on me.

I was prescribed an Rx by my GP when I was first diagnosed...but decided to wait on filling it...to see if the therapy I had recently started would suffice.

The therapy did help stop my panic attacks (and self help enables me to manage the daily anxiety issues)

...so no, I have not been on medication...but see it as an essential tool...and would not hesitate to use it if the need ever arises for my circumstances!

Thanks for Sc for that honest comment. That's were I'm trying to be at in my life now not using antidepressants only Xanax if needed but if I really really need to go back on a med I would have to.
