i just had it done, i was quoted a sliding scale, not sure where you are from but in the US it is 300 if you have a combined income over 74,000, 180 i believe if you earn between 5,000 and 74,000, and i believe 100 dollars or something if under 5000. my insurance told me they do not cover it, but they still submit a claim and i have been tracking the pending claim online it has all sorts of huge dollar numbers attached to it so far but they said it takes over a month to process so i am trusting the orignal pricing structure is what it will boil down to.
anyways. boring financial crap out of the way, my psych took a cheek swab and that was it, mailed it in, got the reults in about a week. got about 20 pages back, it is alot of mumbo jumbo for doctors and people to read about different metabolites and some links to known FDA contradictions to certain metabolites. when it boils down to it, it compares your dna somehow and determines what meds you might metabolize better and thus have more success and less side effects with.
it places all the drugs tested (you can find them on thier website) and puts them in one of three categories. basically yes, maybe and no, as far as what your dna says about how it will metabolize each specific med. h
two of my meds were in the yes or best category, none in the middle, and 2 were in the bad, or no category. now, however one of the meds that i take that was in the bad metabolizing category for me was propranolol, which i know for a fact is working, and have touted its effects on this board before. i have tangible results with lower blood pressure and less heart and chest related anxiety symptoms. my doc did discontinue the other one thats in the "bad" catergory as we both felt it wasnt doing anything.
the ones that were in the "good" catergory we are continuing and even increasing, and it gives me some relief to know that they are likely matches for me.
at any rate, if you can afford it i think its a great tool, not a road to a cure, but a suggestion at where to start. it still comes down to trial and error in my mind with psych drugs but this knowledge would hopefully take some of the guesswork away, so you arent just blindly picking drugs out of a hat.
also for no additional fee they give you pain meds that youd likely metabolize well incase you ever get injured.
sorry for the super long read, any more q's feel free to email me. or respond here.
