Can you split a 5mg lexapro in half or not. ??

I just read on a website that you CAN split 20 & 10mg lexapro pills in half but you CANNOT split 5 mg tablets in half.... What's the deal with that? I'm freaking out now because I've been on 7.5 mg (5 mg and half of a 5) for the last 5 days (doctor told me to do this to gradually increase to 10mg) anyone know if this is true??

The only reasons I can imagine this may be are:

*5 mg is already below the starting dose level, which is typically 10 mg...so what you read may have been in reference to the fact that taking just 2.5 mg would be ineffective.

*What you read may have been referring to a time released version of this med? I know a TR pill can't be split...

Maybe calling your pharmacist would help you get the answers you need. They have a vast knowledge of Rx's of course.:)

You should be fine to split a 5mg tablet but check with your pharmacist.

I used to do it all the time. Never had any problems with it.

Physically you can split a 5mg tablet no problem. I used to take 2.5mg when first starting with Lexapro and did it all the time. I think perhaps it's more to do with the small dosage not being therapeutic (I read most pdocs say you need 10mg at minimum), but initially 2.5 was strong enough for me, so halving the 5mg tabs was what I did.
