Use of busparine "as needed" for anxiety and stress

I have occasional anxiety regarding fear of medical issues and if a symptom may be the start of something catastrophic. Although my doctor says I'm fine, I can't seem to handle the anxiety that accompanies these feelings. I also have occasional stress from interpersonal interactions. I never argue and internalize reactions as stress rather than confront issues. My doctor has prescribed busparine 7.5mg on an as needed basis, but a lot of what I've read here indicates that it is not meant for just once in a while dosage. Some of the comments scare the hell put me as the side effects are worse than the anxiety/stress. Any thoughts?

Hello and welcome!

The jury is hung on the use of Buspar as a pro re nata med. For some, it is effective as needed, but for others it is not, and is taken daily.

Other as needed Rx's for acute anxiety/panic are benzodiazepines or an antihistamine such as Vistaril. You may want to ask your doctor about these options if you find the Buspar not meeting your needs.

When I was on Buspar it didn't kick in fully for a few weeks. I had to maintain a consistent dosage, but I have read some find it helpful on an as needed basis.

My general thought, having taken Klonopin before too, is that a benzo might be better for occasional use. Although of course benzos can be addicting for some, so you have to weigh that when deciding. Agree that consulting with your doc on an ongoing basis is best.

I've been on buspar for years. It took several weeks for it to build up in my system and start working. The only side effects I've ever had was lightheadedness shortly after taking my morning dose. It only lasted for about a week.

it works as needed for me . not so effective on severe anxiety tho. better for mild to moderate anxiety

It doesn't work situationally for me. Had to build it up.
