Yesterday I was feeling ok and then towards the end of the day it hit me like a ton of bricks. I felt this rush of anxiety just whip through and it overcame me. I took a .25mg xanax again to work it down and it helped a bit but waking up this morning im just distraught and feel so hopeless. I thought that I was actually making progress but for some reason I couldnt use my coping skills yesterday to get through. I feel like im going to feel like this forever.

I haven't kept up to date on everything going on, but how much Xanax do you take per day and how long have you taken it?

I ask because I was prescribed Xanax back when I was 24. It worked for awhile and then I spun out of control. Flash forward to this past year. My clonazepam failed and I was put on Xanax. The Xanax also failed, indicating that benzodiazepines are just not effective for me.

Through my medication battle, I have come to find that the only thing that will work in preventing the severe anxiety and panic attacks is an SSRI. I don't know if that helps for you or not, or whether you've tried one, but this was certainly my answer.

I've been on Lexapro for two years and was actually put on it due to an episode of panic and anxiety that I had. Just recently I had a breakthrough of the anxiety during a very stressful time and its now been a week and spun out of control. I scheduled a meeting with my PDOC for tomorrow to go over what to do but Im feeling so hopeless at the moment. Ive only been taking .25mg xanax every other day for the past 7 days. Ive been using it as needed.

I am sorry. sad I know how discouraging this can be.

Try to hold on though...you are just a week into your regular Rx...the one that helped you gain a lot of ground before switching to the generic.

In other words, you did this before, and it will happen again with time.

Keep hopeful. Positive thinking is going to a long way in ensuring the best possible outcome!

Everyone is different, but in general, I would say that a lot of people report some improvement in their second full week of a start up.

This is not to say that everything will suddenly be improved, like a switch...but by the next week, hopefully you will be feeling the beginnings of a turnaround. smile

I feel you on this one. I too was doing ok for awhile then something stressful happened and spun things out of control. One thing I learned is that I'm super hard on myself when my anxiety comes back full force. One thing my doctor has told me is that I have panic disorder and the sooner I accept that the less the symptoms will impact me. I've cried and cried and have literally gotten on my knees to pray. One thing that helps me is "This too shall pass..." I know that I'll come out of the slump I'm in and have some relief. Don't be too hard on yourself and know that with medicine and a positive outlook you'll have moments of relief.

The headspace app and the abide app have really helped me. I know that once I have an attack I'm afraid of more and this cycle begins. Start slow and give yourself some time in the morning to wake up slowly. I do my apps in the am to start my day off right.

Let us know what the doc says. I hope you can find something that will work better. I don't think the Xanax is helping much.

AK,

Sorry to hear about your panic attack. Try not to see it as a step back, but just ammo and fuel to work even harder to push forward. Easier said than done, I know.

Aside from your medication, what coping skills do you use?
