Good afternoon. I have posted here a few times about
my recent journey with anxiety, and how zoloft didn't work for me after a short trial. I have tried 2 SSRI's now in my life, and both backfired terribly. Given that, just curious what others have had success with outside of that category. I have started seeing a psychiatrist (2 appointments so far) and she did prescribe trazadone for me to help with sleep which has been an issue with all this anxiety/worry. It does help, but I feel I need something to help on the other end during day to day functioning. Back in 2010 I went through my other period of anxiety after not being able to sleep for a week. I took that obsession over not sleeping and let it blow up into something much more debilitating. I saw a psychologist at that time who put me on klonopin in order to bring me down stress-wise so he could work with me on CBT. I did notice relief, and 2 months later things really cleared up for me. I suggested perhaps trying K again based on that experience, but my current psychiatrist is hesitant about
a benzo stating that it takes away your natural ability to address the problem. I can see that, but I can also see I am stuck right now and may need help with medication. I never have had an addictive personality ever, and have a history to prove that. Any comments out there? I so much appreciate the comments to my other posts, thank you!

any long term use of klonipin WILL result in addiction. if you are dead set against another ssri -you can try going the supplement route. st jons wort did work somewhat for me . there is also 5 htp. kava works gangbusters but its got a record of liver damage long term use so use it at your own risk -but it does ease anxiety very well. what worked execellent for me when I was trying not to take klonipin is chamomile capsules. I read about
it on line where some one tested all the otc herbal anxiety meds and chamomile came out on top (kava was best but the tester was concerned about
liver issues so he excluded it from the test. I tried it and it worked great to my surprise. I took a med called buspar for anxiety and it worked well for me before my problems got to a crisis point . I then when back on an ssri. buspar is non addictive but is only for mild anxiety. ask dr about
it. its only side effect was slight dizziness at first.

So you would recommend B for mild anxiety? How long did you take it? Did it take some time to kick in? Probably a safer alternative to klonopin from the sounds of it.

Diazepam as a success, for about
2-3 months. Will have to discontinue in future, very slowly.

Hi
If you've not had much joy with the ssri's there are lots of other options such as the SNRI's such as Effexor and Cymbalta which both work well on anxiety, Another option would be Remeron (Mirtazapine) which is great for anxiety and also good for sleep.
Talk things through with your doctor and see what they suggest as finding the right medication that works and suits you can take time.

I took Xanax for 3-4 months 3x daily to get me out of a terrible panic cycle. I got off it without any problems. A couple years later I had a bit of lingering anxiety that I didn’t like, so I started on a very low dose of lexapro, just 5 mgs. In the inbetween time, I took buspar, that is not an ssri. But, it usually only works on low to mid level anxiety, and like most medications, does not work for everyone.

yes Minnesota -I do recommend buspar for mild anxiety. its supposed to take a few weeks to kick in but for me it worked right away-just like a rescue med. its not generally supposed to work like this but for me it did. I took it for aproxx 3 years . not daily but as needed. very safe and non habit forming. down side as mentioned by some one above-it dosnt work for everyone and is only effective for low to mild anxiety. when I hit my crisis point-it wasn't enough. hibee also recommended remeron- it works gangbusters for sleep! I didn't use it long enough or on a reg basis for anxiety. but it sure knocked out the insomnia big time

Wow, great feedback here to those who responded to me! I meet with my psychiatrist this coming Wednesday and need to leave there with some prescript
ion, things are just too stuck for me to try to work this out on my own right now. Sounds like my best options may be either buspar or effexor, or perhaps a short time on klonopin. I just get the sense my Psy only wants to use benzos as a last resort, but K did work for me years back when I had similar stuff going on. I will let you all know what happens here in a few days. Many thanks again, great to have people share things like this in order to make things easier!

Powerful statement there. Thank you. Just curious on your journey....what brought on your anxiety? I hate to bring up memories, but just looking to hear how others coped at their worst. I am still in shock somewhat in that 2 months ago I was a perfectly normal person w/o any of this. Unreal how the mind can take things one way and create havoc. But, I have to think that if the mind can do that, it can also be a tool in healing. Right?

I found out I had prostate cancer. that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I had been off ssri drugs for 3 years .I had coped fairly well with ups and downs but this was just too much. I had a terriable time starting back and it took 4 tries to find a med I could tolerate but I came tru eventually . if this wasn bad enough I became dependant on klonopin. everything is much better now . no more benzos and I found a very gentle ssri that works for me. cipralex 10mg . its a weaker form of Lexapro.
