I've been dealing with psychiatric issues for most of my life. Hence, I decided to go into therapy years ago. And I elected to see psychiatrists at the same time in order to get on helpful psychiatric medication.
When I first went into therapy, the medication I was on wasn't working. And that was a big reason why the talk therapy wasn't working. By not being on the right meds, I was too depressed to believe in much of anything positive any counselor had to say. Also, I was too anxious to be able to be calmed down with psychotherapy.
So was the therapy I received at that time a big waste of time since it wasn't calming me down and wasn't making me feel more optimistic?
Actually, no.
The thing is, once I got on medication that actually helped me a lot with my depression and anxiety, I remembered the advice the therapists had given me beforehand. And since I was feeling happier and much calmer, I was able to finally believe in the positive advice that I had received beforehand. Hence, I started feeling even better.
So if you're feeling bad emotionally and find talk therapy so far to be unhelpful because you're not on the right pill(s) and you're feeling too lousy to believe in much of anything good any therapist has to say, chances are the therapy you've already received hasn't been a waste of time.
It certainly wasn't a waste of time for me in the long run.
