trying to do something--anything to help

Good morning to all,

I suffer from anxiety which has gotten worse as I age. I am always worried something will go wrong especially in a critical time in my life.

I have something to feel good about for a change. My wife and I cut out roughly five hundred masks for our courageous healthcare workers!!! We were given a set of instructions on how to make the masks. I told my wife I have to do something to feel as if I am helping. There are plenty of groups on facebook asking for help or volunteers. We were putting the masks together but it was too hard as I have degenerative disc disease. Instead now we cut up all the fabric to make all the parts of a mask. We then give it to another person in our area who distributes the pieces for assembly. Its teamwork which carries the day. We have cut out five hundred over the past five days. I hope to start on the next batch of five hundred soon.

Even if you could get people to cut fabric for you. Or somebody to donate elastic. Even better get a group. 500 a week is good. I hope you can find some elastic.

You're a GOOD person, OceanFisher. That's apparent by reading your posts. Even if you weren't making masks, you'd still be a good person. Thank both you & your wife for the hardwork & sincere efforts, to help strangers. May God bless you both.

Our facebook group is still getting incredible requests for large amounts of masks. It would seem we as a country are ill prepared for this pandemic. I certainly hope we learn a lesson from all this for the next time.

My wife and I now have specialized our efforts. We cut up the fabric and make the components for the masks. Then we turn over the pieces for assembly. Works great for us.

Yes, volunteering is a great way to help the vulnerable at this time, with the added plus that it keeps our hands and mind busy. I volunteer for Meals on Wheels - check to see if they need help in your area.

I've volunteered for MOW going on 3 years. Some days I help pack, other days I deliver (I don't work everyday). As with any job, the people you work with play a big part in how well you enjoy it, and there are a lot of wonderful people who work in the kitchen. These days we all wear masks and try to keep a safe distance, as best we can. I especially enjoy delivering meals; these days I have about 20 stops. Now with the COVID situation, most of our clients leave a cooler on their porch, and after I place their meal inside, I'll step back a ways and wait for them to come out so I can still greet them to be sure they're okay. The program heavily relies on volunteers, so I hope any folks here considering a volunteer job will check them out. It's very rewarding knowing you're providing help for those in most need.
