Hi all,
I hope today finds everyone calm and in good spirits. I wanted to bring up a new med for discussion which my GI dr has given me. The med is called Donnatal. It is a combination of Phenobarbital, atropine, levsin and scopolamine. It is both a sedative medication and a med for IBS. I took two today and it has calmed me quite a bit and helped my abdominal cramping. I feel relaxed and quite tranquil for a change.

I was wondering if anyone had tried it. It is very costly and not covered by my insurance. I have to pay for it out of pocket which is almost two hundred dollars per month. Ouch!!!! I know. I am desperate and will pay for it for a while if it helps. Why my insurance wont pay is beyond me. As I understand it is quite an older med. No generic available I was told. Most drs do not want to prescribe because of the Phenobarbital. Looking forward to any comments from all. I looked it up for reviews from others and it was heralded as a great med for IBS along with anxiety. Many people complained it was not covered and drs were reluctant to prescribe. It broke my heart as so many people said it helped them so much many many years ago.

You seemed to have done your homework.

I hope it works for you. Net says GI doctor is a gastroenterologist who works with stomach problems.

I hope it keeps working. Let us now how this is going.

OceanFisher, I was prescribed Donnatal several times by ER drs. This was long before I was diagnosed with crohns disease. It worked very well for me. My gi has on occasion prescribed it too.

Check out Donnatal at GoodRx.com. You put in the name of the medication, dosage & it will pull up the names of pharmacies that accepts GoodRx, along with the price. You can also download their app on your phone. I use GoodRx all of the time & it saves me so much money.

Thanks for the recommendations. I called the pharmacies around me and none stock donnatal. Not walgreesns, not Walmart. I have to have it delivered by mail. The mail order comes from Penn. Susie, could you possibly tell me about your chrons disease please. Symptoms and so on. My GI dr said I have IBS. I have anxiety issues but my goodness my stomach and lower abdomen always hurt. It just seems to be way worse than IBS could be. Not that IBS is not bad. I have had a few colonoscopies and upper endoscopic exams which shows inflammation which leads me to believe I may have IBD or chrons also. I don't know it just seems all this pain is more than IBS. Having stomach and abdominal pain everyday is just horrible.

Thanks Joshua for the advice. Unfortunately I seem to have too many things wrong at the same time. The 200 dollar med is one in which most drs don't want to prescribe because it has phenobarbital in it. The medical community worries we will all become addicts. I am all for watching our intake of harmful meds but for those of us whose quality of life is dependent on addictive meds then the choice for me is easy. I will chose quality of life any day over becoming addicted.

Just my thoughts
