I'm taking 5 mg of rosuvastatin, and have for about 10 months. It's my third try at a statin and seems to be without side effects. Before that, I was on atorvastaton, then pravachol. Both gave me muscles aches and loss of energy.
I decided to go low and slow to see if could tolerate this statin before increasing the dose. I started a weekly dose with 5 mg rosuvastatin, then gradually upped it to my current dose of 4x weekly. I tried five times weekly and had side effects, so backed it off. Some people do better with hydrophilic statins like rosuvastatin rather than lipophilic statins like atorvastatin.
I didn't give up trying over the past two years, and am glad I finally found a statin that would work. There are non-statin cholesterol-lowering drugs, but they are expensive and insurance does not pay for them until statin options have failed.
