Just spoke to a friend today who has been on lexapro for about 6 wks- she sounds sooooooooooo much better- her old self again!! Was so thrilled to hear her sounding so good!

She mentioned that lexapro has an anti-anxiety component as well as an anti-depression component, and said that "it works on both sides of the brain". Does anyone know anything about this? Do the other SSRI's work in the same way? (My Zoloft was originally prescribed to me for A/P)

I believe most SSRi's do work for both there are the ones that work for one or the other as far as I am aware

lexapro is one of many prozac type meds, an antidepressant

all antidepressant meds can sometimes help with anxiety and panic attacks as well as depression

this was originally shown about 30 years ago but took time to become popular

nobody knows exactly how these meds work, its hust theories, however its known that often they do work

It's great to hear that your friend had positive results and she's feeling better. I'm currently on Celexa and I believe it's the same as Lexapro just not as strong. The psychiatrist said that it would help tremendously with my anxiety. Georgia

Yeah... I'm back to pretty much my old self again too... before I wouldn't even get outta bed because of the depression and severe panic... now I'm pretty good.. I've been on Lexapro for about two months

still having occasional panic attacks, bouts of anxiety and depression but better nonetheless..

twiggy and a.l. how long for the lexapro to work for you twiggy and your friend a.l. you say she has been on 2 months and you also twiggy, I have been on for 3 weeks, still a little more anxious than would like to be and still not really able to eat much, is this going to level out and in about how long

glad to hear you and a.l. friend is doing better, nice to hear that people do recover from this.

I took lexapro a year and half ago and don't remember it taking this long to work.

scaredycat-  How long for the lexapro to work?  I'd say about 3 weeks is when it started working for me, I didn't reach the full effects until I had been taking it for 6 weeks though (where I could skip a benzo every other day)

Honestly I couldn't eat very well either.  My appetite has just come back about a week ago.  Then you'll really wonder about the "empty stomach syndrome" because no matter what I eat I still feel a bit hungry LOL

I didn't stop feeling anxious for the first couple to 3 weeks on it, but after that the ride is pretty smooth for me.
