Paxil and Problems Getting to Sleep

Question for anyone in here that is currently taking Paxil or has taken in the past: Did you have any problems getting to sleep at night and/or going back to sleep if you were woke up in the middle of the night? I know this is a side effect from the Paxil I've been taking for the last month or so, I just thought it would eventually go away. If you have experienced this, can you tell me if it does eventually go away, and how long you have to be on before it does. I would looooove to get a full night sleep once again.

Hi Tuna,

I'm having the same symptom from Celexa. I used to be able to sleep straight through the night and since i've been on the meds for the last couple of weeks I wake up a few times in the middle of the night and find it hard to fall back asleep. I've also noticed that i've become much more of light sleepier. Which is very strange for me before I could barely hear the alarm clock.

It's frustrating not being able to sleep at night. I know it's better than being anxious and depressed, but man, I need my sleep as well. I sure hope this goes away after sometime. Thanks for posting though Georgia. I'm interested to hear if anyone else has had this problem and/or if it ever was resolved.

paxil is one of many prozac type meds and these all effect people differently, have you tried taking it on waking?

you may do better by swapping to any other prozac type med, this can be done overnight

an antidepressant that stimulates one person will sedate another

Tuna, I had same problem at the beg., my doc. prescribed some Ambien (sleeping aid). Now, I take Paxil around 8:00a.m. - and 1/4 Xanax (pill is 0.5). 1/2 of Xanax at night to help me sleep better. Also, I used to have very vivid dreams - still do, once in a while, - is this a side effect??

Thanks Harry and Jade for your input! I know that I can switch to another med, however, I just went to doc last Monday and he said since I've been taking 40 mg and it's in my system why don't we bump it up to 60. This was his answer in regards to me still having some obsessing/anxious thoughts. Probably won't help the sleeping matter at all. I just wondered if this will go away eventually or not. Like you Jades, I took Paxil years ago, and at that time my previous doctor prescribed me Ativan to keep me asleep at night. I hate to take something else just to get to sleep though, as I never had a problem sleeping before. I go back to see my doc in another 3 months. If things are straightened out by then, I'll probably try something else, or see what the doctor says.
