Effexor CR, and heart palpitations

I started out on 37.5, then went to 75 then to 150mg, I started to notice that I was having heart palpitations, and after an emergency room visit, I was told that is was due to the dose, so I lowered the dose to 75mg. And I am still having them. My questions are, has anyone else had palpitations from taking effexor? And what can I take that does not give me palpitations?

Hi Jay,

 

I have been taking effexor for the last 3 months.  I started on 75mg, increased to 150mg and am now taking 225mg.  When I increased I experienced heart palpitations.  I do get these with my anxiety but noticed that I was geting them when I wasn't anxious.

 

I had an ECG but it was normal.  Palps are a common side effect and I found that after a couple of weeks they just dissappeared.  I found that all the side effects I experienced from the effexor dissappeared after i had got used to it.

 

Now I am side effect free I have found this medication to be really good and it has helped my anxiety and depression so much.

 

I stuck with it but see how you feel.  If you are having what I had, they will go away.

Well it has worked wonders for me, but I cannot hang with the palpitations, it freaks me out. I am so worried that I will not do as well on something else.

I can understand your concern about something else not working as well as this medication.  How long have you been taking it and how long have you had the palpitations?  Have you spoken to your doctor about it?

 

I know I felt horrible when I was experiencing them but they did go.  I found also that the more I focused on my heart rate and the more I noticed it, the worse the palpitations got so I think I was concentrating on it too much and waiting for it to start.

 

If you can stick with it, they should go but I can understand if you feel to bad.

if the palps are from anxiety, just accept them and ignore them and they should soon stop, monitoring and checking them always makes them worse

adding  a beta blocker such as inderal for a while may help, ask doc

if the palps are from the effexor, you may need to swap to another antidepressant

Hoping these settle down real quick for you
I know I could not handle the palps either I get enough w/o having more from a med
Keep us posted please on how you are doing
