Recent GAD Diagnosis--Question about medication

I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiet Disorder two weeks ago and I went to see a psychiatrist yesterday for medication.  He prescribed Lexapro, but I just found out that it's not a formulary drug with my health insurance company and I would have to pay nearly a $100 per prescription for it.  There's also no generic for this according to my carrier.  This money is not completely out of the question, but I would like to know if there are any alternatives I can research and discuss with my doctor.  Some of the medications in the formulary are:

Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Paxil, Rapiflux, and Celexa.

I currently take Lexapro myself, and have no health insurance, but due to the results I'm having with it... I'm staying on it anyway.

There are many antidepressants like Lexapro.

Cymbalta is another, Effexor is another, and the meds you mentioned above also come in generic.

Lexapro does not have a generic, but all these meds do.

Unfortunate I know, but speaking with your doc about a med that's affordable for you will probably be your best option.

I agree with Twiggygirl on this one
You can either pay that price every month or see if there is a viable ned for u that is covered

You still have very good choices on your formulary that could help. Zoloft was excellent for me, as was Paxil for anxiety symptoms. Prozac was the only one I did not find helpful.

Also, keep in mind many psydocs feel there is no difference between Celexa and Lexapro in clinical effectiveness and the removal of Celexa's stereo isomer was more for marketing and patent protection. However, some people have reported Lexapro has less side effects.

Good luck and remember meds can help, but therapy and CBT are very important too!

lexapro is a newer and still patented prozac type, therefore expensive

generic prozac would probly be as good, theres no proof that the new antidepressants are any better than prozac, or any more suitable for your problem

as with all antidepressants yours will be a big help if it works for you, you will need to take it for up to 6 weeks to find this out

helps to start with a low dose and work up

a pity doc didnt also prescribe some valium type meds, these are very effective for panic attacks and anxiey and can be taken as needed
