I have a similar story. I'm 38, proper weight, relatively active, no smoke, no health issues, and 2 1/2 years ago, shortly after my second daughter was born, I started having vaginal cramps around ovulation, plus discharge. They weren't ovulation cramps on the sides, it was in the middle, and it hurt. I was also having severe heart palpitations, migraines, anxiety (who knows which came first...), no appetite, dry mouth, dizziness, racing heart, insomnia...etc. I swore to God I was dying of something, and I was totally freaked out. I saw saw my dr and had an ekg plus thyroid tests done. Everything was fine. I wore a holter monitor for a month, everything was fine. They tested my glucose levels, hormone levels, electrolyte levels, I had a CBC...they gave me every test under the sun. Everything checked out normal.
But this crap is not normal. I felt like I needed to see someone who specialized in the natural treatment of hormones and vaginas, so about
a year ago I saw a recommended midwife/naturopath in my area. After a 2 hour discussion, we decided I should do these things:
1. no coffee (I had already not been drinking coffee)
2. no wheat (this was and is the hard part)
3. good daily multivitamin
4. minimal sugar
5. daily ingestion of deep greens (lettuce does not count)
6. hormone balancing herbal tincture (yam, black cohosh, vitex, cramp bark) varying amounts
7. liver assisting tincture (dandelion and burdock) daily
8. motherwort tincture as needed to calm symptoms (very helpful for me)
9. I also make myself a quart of nettle infusion a few times a week and drink it.
The idea was that around ovulation the hormones fluctuate and the liver has to clean all that up. If your liver is loaded down with trying to deal with all the simple carbs (wheat), it can't keep up with getting the hormones out safely. Hormone overload causes all these symptoms.
Also, beautiful as they are, pregnancy and childbirth are very hard on our bodies. I lost a lot of blood, plus I breast fed, so it was difficult for my body to return to normal.
You would not believe what a difference this made. I kept a detailed record of my symptoms over the months, and they dwindled to almost none (I still get the migraine...and an occasional rogue palpatation...). Then I fell off the "wagon"...for valentines my husband made me a cake, full of wheat and sugar, and it was delicious. Then it was my daughter's birthday. More delicious cake. Then it was my birthday. Then it was my husband's birthday. Then I made a huge pan of lasagne.
And guess what? All those same symptoms came right back, right at ovulation, just like clockwork. And it sucked.
I hope some of what I'm doing can help some of you...because this thing is real, and it's not fun. But try and see a midwife/naturopath if you can about
the herbs. I'm not sure about
the ratios she gave me, your ratios may be different depending on your situation/body. I'm supposed to take a different amount before ovulation than after ovulation, and none at all during my period. The hormone balancing herbs are for short term, but the dandelion and burdock can be taken indefinitely.
Peace.
