How to prolong the alprazolam half-time? Is omeprazole helpful?

Hi everybody, :-)


I'd like to find out if omeprazole (a stomach proton-pump inhibitor drug; as it is metabolised by the cytochrome P450 enzymes) influences on the alprazolam (aka Xanax) half-time and its effect. I have tried 20 mg of omeprazol and 0,5 mg of alprazolam, but I wonder if possible (not so marked) increase of the effect was only an autosuggestion, or real impact. confused


I ask because if it's so, then I could take less tablets of this cure to get desired effect; I would like to save the tablets as it is not very easy to get this cure - doctors but prescribe such ones so unwillingly, although I personally have the social anxiety problems. sad


The most interesting doses for me are 0,5 or 0,75 mg of alprazolam and 20 mg of omeprazole.

Has anyone here tried it?


Or, if it doesn't work, maybe there are some other natural, and safe of course, ways to prolong the alprazolam half-time and concentration in the blood, and maybe you know about some of them? (Maybe the casual carton grapefruit juice, but it's told somewhere it's no impact... eyes

Hello and welcome as a new member to Healing Well. I have read this post and also your other posts.
The 2 drugs you mention here, Xanax for anxiety and Prilosec for GERD or acid indigestion are prescribed for specific reasons and Prilosec is now easily available over the counter.
Do I think you should be trying to work out half lifes of drugs etc..........no. Everyone metabolizes drugs at different rates as well as some are metabolized through the liver and others excreted in urine.
I would not want any of our members to even consider the possibility of manipulating thier drug dosing in this manner.
This is my 2 cents worth

I would be asking a pharmacist to look this uo for you , try your usual one first

ironically grapefruit is said to alter xanax

Well, I only interest myself in pharmacology a bit... :-)

But I take my alprazolam very rarely - only really occasionally - so that's why I consider possible mild interactions. I obviously don't suppose anybody to "playing" with their everyday dosage, as I know some people get the benzodiazepines daily.

Dear Licho,

I did not mean to sound so stern. I was concerned re your post that you might get into serious problems and perhaps exacerbate your condition by looking at half life of a combo of drugs.
