Ive been taking Paxil for a while for depression. I tried to go off of it but I became highly irritible, so Im on 20mg a day. Anyway, I just had another episode yesterday that I need to discuss. I saw my brother, whom I haven't seen in almost 2 years, I sped up along side of him on a toll way, I honked and waved, I don't think he saw me but I started to get very dizzy and "spacey" with kind of like blurred vision. This used to happen to me all the time in school when the teacher called on me. Now, I never hyper ventilate, but my heart rate does rise. Also, when I got in one of the few fist fights of my life, I would pretty much black out. I wouldn't even be able to process in my mind what was going on, like I was just on auto-pilot. So I would just become a punching bag, lol. I joined this site because I am having problems with my ulcerative colitis, so I thought Id talk with you guys about my other issues too. Any replies would be appreciated.

Sounds like you do have some anxiety issues as well as the depression
Many self help techniques out there to give you a go at fighting this DD

Plus you could also ask your doc for a short term fast acting med for the a/p to go along with techniques

Sounds like it to me, similar to my symptoms. Sounds like a dump of adrenaline. Still best to get checked out by family doc.

Yes, a large dose of adrenaline is the best way to describe it. I guess I need to learn how to relax during my "intense" situations. Its just that it seems everybody else is always calm, I lose it and become detached from myself over the simplist things. I really do not want to get on xanax or something. Does meditation work for stuff like this?

Personally for me it has and does as does Relaxation techniques ( I will bring that thread up for you ) and Cognitive behavioural Therapy

Kitt has the better link for that I am doing an older version...........ONLINE N FREE......

Self help books like "lucinda Basset " s are great as well

Going for bike rides ,nature walks ect this can all help you out in the FIGHT........

Do you smoke? Do you drink? Do you excercise?

The reason I ask is these all play a part.
Smoking stimulates nicotinic receptors that have a way of creating an affect that causes additional anxiety in those that are prone to it. Alcohol is similar.

Excercising will help you realize that adrenaline as nothing but what it is.

I have trouble keeping up with my excercise, and smoke like a chimney now that I have gotten back on Lexapro (that is another story).

If you can avoid medicines, please try to do so.
Klonopin, Xanax, and all the SSRIs and anxiety med therapies are not the easy way out, trust me.
Learn self relaxation, breathing techniques, and get plenty of rest/excercise/water. You will be glad you did in the long run.

They're not the easy way out, but they can be a part of the solution. Fact is, jedi mind tricks and exercise don't always work UNLESS there's something there to help out. Once on a medication, nobody should rest. They should then learn the techniques you describe, because they're more likely to work at that point. I'm convinced that recovery is 95 percent mental and only 5 percent chemical, but as I've said before I never could've gotten a handle on this thing without pharmaceuticals. Everyone's different, of course. But I couldn't and as long as I couldn't I'm sure there are many more who can't.

Back to topic:

UC guy, if this happens often I'd skip the family doctor and go to a psychiatrist if possible. This type of thing is their specialty. Some family docs are great and some are not.

Hello and I am sorry that you are having these issues.  Anxiety and depression manifest themselves different for each person.

One way to handle stress is to change your mindset. Develop hardiness—an appreciation for challenge, a commitment to living and a belief that you have control over your life. This can lead to greater resilience.

Please give it a look and try it out.  Never hurts to try something new.
