In another thread I mentioned how the new pdoc had prescribed me 80 mg. of generic paxil in place of 75 mg. of paxil cr. I read that 20 mg. of paxil is equal tp 25 mg. of paxil cr. That means that I ptobably should've been prescribed 60 mg. of paxil...however, I'm not a doctor, so last nite I took the 80 mg....I hate this not knowing what's right to do. I called a pharmacist and naturally they can't tell you to go against your doc...I just dunno!

janetlee,
This is what I came up with:
Paxil or paroxetine 20mg is basically equivalent to Paxil CR 25mg,
Therefore 75mg of Paxil CR would equal 60mg of Paxil.
I would suggest you call your physician to clarify why he order 80 mg, perhaps he did not know the dosing equivalents.
The maximum dosage for Paxil even according to GSK literature is 60mg per day.
Hope this helps you some

Kitt,
That's exactly what I mean! Isn't that weird?! I have no idea what to do cuz the doc might not be thrilled being questioned...my anxiety has been a bit higher today. I know I'm stressed over all this.
Thanks for your input sweet Kitt!

janet,
You have patient's rights which means you have the right to make decisions regarding your health care and if the Dr. gets in a snit, well he owns the problem.
I understand your anxiety. They have the power to write the Rx.
Hugs sweetie.

yeah, definitely call and if you are worried that the doctor maybe offended, just presented to him in a kind manner. Say you know what the equivalency is and if there was a reason he prescribe you a higher dose? Also mention that you want to be on an equivalent dose as before, and that you've done the numbers a bunch of times and you are being over prescribe.
It definitely sounds like doctors error to me, but he may have some strategy that i'm not aware of. Regardless, you should feel confident about
this sort of thing, and right now thats what this doctor needs to provide you with.
Hang in there, and keep writing. I totally know the what you are going through. A/P is scary enough as it is. Medications are scary enough as it is... So, yeah I think its gonna really help to talk to him on monday. In the mean time, be kind to yourself. Try not to allow this to cause you even more anxiety ( I know thats almost impossible to do, but try). And keep writing, if that make you feel better.
Keep us posted. I'm curious to what he says.
