Elaine, I am sorry to hear your husband is battling lung cancer. I truly wish him a good prognosis. I promise to keep working very hard at it. Thanks for your note. :)...
Thank you.....and I will. :)...
Well....it's day 4 here of my quit (cold turkey) and the flare has begun. :( Darn it anyway. I have upped my meds the past 4 days to 3x per day (instead of 2x per day as prescribed) but did not add...
Thanks Heather. I agree that it's more probable than not that I will flare due to my quit - I have every time in the past that I attempted this. And trust me - there's no better motivator for a...
Hi....looking for some advice from the forum. I am quitting smoking on Saturday and would like to proactive against the probable resulting flare if possible. I am currently taking Asacol (800mg twice...
Hi Joylu. Yes, I started smoking again (twice now) as it seems to help keep my UC in remission. I was another of those that was first diagnosed with UC after I had quit smoking for a few months. My...
Good for you, Tony. I agree that going back to (or continuing) smoking is not without it's own risks and negative impact on day to day life. Lung cancer is horrible and I'm sure the suffering much,...
I know this is a sensitive topic and one with many varying opinions....for me personally, I've decided to stick with smoking. Hopefully this flare I set off by quitting for a couple days will be...
Yes, that is what happened to me. I smoked for about 15 years, quit for about a year and a half, had a flare that resulted in being diagnosed and starting meds - started smoking again about 2 months...
Thanks Hak....I'm glad to know your flare didn't last too long. I am scared I would be facing months of hell. I'm going to try my best to get off them for good. Congrats on your quit! :)...
Yeah....ironic, isn't it?? Here's an article I just found on Medical News Today.....FYI: Doctors have long known that smokers rarely suffer from a common form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)...
It's actually not the nicotine, it's the carbon monoxide that helps UC. I'm on a nicotine patch right now to help me quit....
Hey everyone...I am on Day 2 of quitting smoking and the flare has started. /community/emoticons/smhair.gif The last time I started smoking again it was to stop a bad flare....and I remained flare...
canna - yes, definitely still have urgency. No D though (usually)....
CORRECTION: I just read the bottle more closely: the ones I take contain 1200mg of omega oils but only 400mg of purified fish oil. They also have 400mg of flax seed oil and 400 of borage seed oil....
I take fish oil (omega 3/6) capsule twice per day and they are 1,200 mg capsules. I'm not sure the impact it has on my UC but there are a lot of other health benefits from the omega oils as well...
The past 5 or 6 months now, it's 1-3 times per day and I *think* I am in remission. My BM aren't what they were before my diagnosis but maybe that's then and this is now and I just have a new normal...
Yup...NOT fun!...
JM, I'm glad you're feeling well. That, to me, is the most important goal. :)...
Hi Lilla. When I first started having symptoms (before and for several months after being diagnosed), I had no D and suffered from constipation along with blood and mucus. I ate a lot of fresh...
Hi Ken. Actually, I'm struggling a bit with the probiotic decision myself at the moment. Right now I am taking Natural Factors Double Strength Acidophilus and Bifidus but I'm not sure if there's one...
This is something I need to get better at. I aim for 2 litres per day but sometimes struggle to get that much into me. One thing to remember also anything you drink that contains caffeine actually...
LOL...you are all too funny! I especially liked Judy's suggestion of taking a picture and framing it. :) Yup, we are a strange lot chatting about poop! Boy it sure feels good to be understood,...
I just had to share this with someone that will understand the sheer JOY I felt today when I had a completely normal BM for the first time in 5 months! I practically started to weep in the bathroom,...
Kelly, I really feel for you and am sorry you are having such a rough time right now. My longest flare like you are dealing with was about 3 months and I was at my wits end trying to cope then. A...
Actually, I'm not off meds (I have corrected my signature). I take Asacol 1600 mg per day. I wouldn't say I'm in complete remission but also not what I would call a flare...no bleeding, 2-4 BM per...
Has anyone tried using a natural detox product? I am thinking about trying one but am a little nervous about side effects for UCers. Anyone with any experience doing a detox/cleanse??...
I just came home today from the hospital after having surgery. I didn't smoke for about 48 hours (before/after surgery) and by tonight I'm starting to have symptoms of a flare again... The same...
Wow..I had no idea a child that young could develop UC. That just does not seem fair at all. I'm very sorry to hear this, it must be difficult news for you and your wife. Sorry I can't offer any...
Kudos on quitting smoking! I tried a few weeks ago and lasted a week. It wasn't the cravings that sucked me back in, it was the fact that I started to flare again and just wasn't ready to let it turn...
I'm lucky that way, unless I'm flaring really badly I don't have to get up in the night to run to the bathroom. It makes me feel better to know my need for what I consider an excessive amount of...
I cannot believe how much sleep I need lately (and I still don't wake up feeling rested). I know UC causes fatique and I'm sure my meds don't help, pretty sure Asacol makes me tired as others have...
I haven't used the enemas but I am using Salofalk suppositories. Are the enemas more effective than the suppositories? I had tapered them down to every other night but my symptoms are coming back so...
Quincy, are you taking 400mg or 800 mg pills? I have the 800mg pills. My doctor had me on a maintenance dose of 1 in the morning and one at night but I increased that to 3 per day when this flare...
That's a good idea. It is worth a shot to hear what my GI doc says. The part that really frustrates me is the tunnel vision I find many doctors (particularly specialists) have. Of course the doctor...
I am scheduled for a hysterectomy on December 14. I decided to quit smoking this week in preparation for my surgery and recovery but I am starting to flare worse today (most likely due to quitting)...
Thanks for the reminder. :) Something I've wondered, are those of us with UC more susceptible to viruses than others with "normal" immune systems? I seem to catch colds and flu bugs much easier now...
Sushi rolls have quickly become my favourite flare food. Lots of sticky rice and good protein there......
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the same as ulcerative colitis. Together with Chron's Disease, the two diseases are referred to as IBD....
Hi there. Sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. I understand completely how overwhelming it is at first to try and understand what exactly this disease is all about. Try not to worry. The "gag...
My situation was kind of opposite of that: I had a c-scope done about a year before I was diagnosed with UC due to bleeding and UC type symptoms and they found nothing but healthy colon. At that...
My doctor is not recommending one at the one year mark, he has said another is not required unless my UC appears to be getting worse. I would feel more comfortable monitoring it every 3 years as it...
Just curious how often people are having a follow up scope (sig or c-scope)? I was diagnosed following my first one last year and when I asked my GI when I should have my next one, he said I only...
I'm pretty sure it was ibuprofen that kicked me out of my 8 month remission and into a flare. I have gynacological issues that cause severe monthly pain. During a particularly severe bout, I took...
I read they should have at least 10 billion live bacteria per dose to be effective. The one I take is made by Natural Factors and has 10 billion live cells per dose....
Good luck tomorrow, Ashna....
Thanks for this link...very interesting....
I do understand that, for some people, the best decision with respect to taking meds on a long-term basis is more of a grey area than a black and white issue as it is for others. While the meds can...
Gee, how nice! The world is full of ignorant and insensitive people. It's one of those sad facts of life...and the way I see it, completely out of anyone's control but their own. If they become...
This is the same line of thinking I had (and still have) when I started smoking again during my first flare - keep it to 6 cigarettes a day to get the "benefits" with minimal exposure to the many...
